Walking our furry friends is such an important part of dog ownership. If you’re borrowing a dog, you might not know the best places to go, so we hope to inspire you with these five local wagtastic walking spots for you and your doggy, borrowed or owned, in Suffolk.
Alton Water
Not only is Alton Water the biggest supplier of drinking water for Ipswich and the Southern portion of Suffolk, it’s a fantastic place to walk your dog. With 400 acres of lovely countryside, there’s loads of fun to be had for both you and your pup. As a nature reserve, there’s plenty wildlife to enjoy while you walk the nature trail or have a wander around the lake. There’s even a cafe where you can relax and enjoy some refreshments.
Other perks include:
- Bike rentals and a designated cycling path
- Fishing spots
- Sailing and windsurfing facilities
Dunwich Beach
This picturesque National Trust spot is the perfect place to walk a dog in Suffolk - if it’s not too windy! Wrap up warm and head down to the beach to play, roam across the heathlands, and relax in the dog-friendly cafe with a hot chocolate or coffee.
Suffolk Beaches
If you’re a dog walker in Suffolk looking after a dog that loves to paddle, then you really need to visit one of the beaches. From October to April, all of Suffolk’s beaches are open without restrictions to dogs, so you and your pooch can enjoy the surf together and follow the coast path from beach to beach.
The Brecks
Popular with walkers, pups and adventure sport enthusiasts alike. With winding bridle paths, a recreation park, deep pine forests and rivers for swimming, there is lots to take in. Making this a great place for dog walking in Suffolk.
Christchurch Park
Christchurch park is another great place to take your dog for a walk if you want a variety of activities and lots of space to explore. There are 70 acres to explore and there you can find park gardens, a wildlife reserve, a wet meadow, sport facilities, a bandstand and more. It’s also home to Christchurch Mansion, a public museum and art gallery, so you’ll be kept very busy.

Rendlesham Forest
Rendlesham Forest can be found roughly 8 miles east of Ipswich. There are three walking trails for you and your dog to enjoy at Rendlesham Forest including the Rendlesham UFO trail, which is named for “the most famous of claimed UFO events to have happened in Britain” according to Wikipedia. The three trails are easy to walk and are all under 5 miles. Cycling trails can be found at Rendlesham as well.
Pin Mill
If you fancy a picturesque location for your dog walk, look no further than Pin Mill. This doggy paradise sits on the banks of river Orwell, so your dog can have a quick swim in addition to a wonderful walk. Here you can also find the popular, dog-friendly pub, the Butt & Oyster, which is a great spot to have a meal with your pup.

Aldeburgh & Thorpeness
A perfect day out with your dog could be walking between the towns of Aldeburgh and Thorpeness, which are only a couple miles apart from one another. From May through September, you can walk with your dog on the beach that joins the two towns. During high season, however, dogs are not permitted on the beach, but you can still enjoy the lovely view.
